Overview
Natures Image was hired to rehabilitate separate parcels of 10 and 25 acres adjacent to the Summerly Links Golf Course as part of a 706-acre master planned residential community. The project was located between Lake Elsinore, Southern California's largest natural lake, the Ortega Mountains, and the Cleveland National Forest.
The Summerly Mitigation Project which is located near the Links at Summerly Golf Course.
Natures Image's expertise in invasive species mitigation made us the contractor of choice in a complex project that required negotiation between the U.S Army Corp of Engineers and the California Department of Fish and Game. The construction began at the mitigation site in April 2009 and consisted of site preparation, irrigation installation, planting, hydroseeding and 5 years of maintenance to reestablish the native vegetation and habitat.
The Challenge
With high levels of salinity, a high water level in the 25 acre region and a large amount of weed mitigation, the condition of the soil must be addressed. As a project in a residential community and golf course, we were provided limited work hours and mandated minimal inconvenience to the residents.
In addition, this project went through some difficult financial aspects with the control being passed along to several different clients and groups before it was settled.
The Solution
The project began with removal of noxious invasive vegetation including Tamarisk, Tree Tobacco, and mustard to eliminate competition with the freshly planted container stock. Next, the application of Agricultural Gypsum was used to address the soil condition and drainage while a temporary ground irrigation system was constructed to ensure new plant establishment and long term success.
The final mitigation step was to hydroseed both sites with a mix of native grasses, native seeds, fiber mulch, stabilizing emulsion, and nutrients to begin the five year plant establishment. With careful planning and local equipment staging, neighborhood interference was kept to a minimum during all stages.
The Result
After planting was completed at the Summerly Mitigation Project.
The construction phase of the mitigation project was completed in July 2009. The site is currently in its second year of maintenance consisting of weeding, irrigation, and debris removal. The seam between the Golf Course and the surrounding habitat is closing and is proof of another successful mitigation project instigating a congruent transition for both human and wildlife uses including an impressive increase in bird populations.
The site is regularly monitored by the onsite biologist and both sites are on schedule to fulfill the 5 year sustainability criteria set forth by the original permit.
